Does Vitamin D Improve Memory in People With Mild Cognitive Impairment?
The reported cognitive-score difference involved older adults who had both mild cognitive impairment and sleep problems. Mild cognitive impairment describes measurable decline that is greater than expected with normal aging but does not necessarily prevent independent daily activities. Some people remain stable or improve, while others progress to dementia.
A score that is 13% higher on one cognitive measure is not the same as a 13% reduction in dementia risk. This threshold is not a precise toxicity boundary, and clinicians sometimes prescribe higher doses to treat documented deficiency, but such treatment may require laboratory monitoring and consideration of the patient's medical history.
Excessive vitamin D can raise blood calcium, potentially causing nausea, weakness, kidney stones, kidney injury or abnormal heart rhythms. People with kidney disease, hyperparathyroidism, granulomatous disorders or medicines that affect calcium balance should be particularly cautious. The practical message from the new report is to support further research, not to recommend unsupervised high-dose supplementation.
