How Are REM and Deep Sleep Linked to Disease Risk?
Sleep is an active biological process composed of repeating non-REM and REM stages. Deep non-REM sleep is associated with reduced heart rate and blood pressure, physical restoration, immune regulation and memory processing, while REM sleep supports learning, emotional processing and other aspects of brain function. Research reported by Medical Xpress found that sleep-stage composition was associated with later disease risk beyond the information provided by total sleep time alone.
These associations have several possible explanations. Disrupted sleep architecture may affect inflammation, glucose regulation, cardiovascular function and the brain's processing of memories and emotions. Existing illness can also disturb sleep, however, and factors such as age, medication use, alcohol, sleep apnea and mental health conditions may influence both sleep stages and disease risk. The findings should therefore be interpreted as evidence of a relationship rather than proof that increasing a particular stage will prevent disease.
Is Total Sleep Time Still Important for Health?
The new findings do not make sleep duration irrelevant. The study associated sleeping less than five hours with elevated risks across many health outcomes. Separately, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society recommend that adults regularly obtain at least seven hours of sleep per night to promote optimal health, while individual needs vary and children generally require more sleep.
Duration and architecture describe different parts of sleep health. A person may spend enough time in bed but experience fragmented sleep because of obstructive sleep apnea, chronic pain, hot flashes, breathing disease or environmental disruption. Conversely, consumer devices may report an apparently unfavorable stage pattern even when the wearer feels rested, because wrist-based trackers estimate rather than directly measure sleep stages.
Can You Increase REM and Deep Sleep Safely?
Evidence-based sleep habits include maintaining a consistent schedule, allowing adequate time for sleep, exercising regularly and keeping the bedroom dark, quiet and comfortably cool. Limiting alcohol is particularly relevant because it can alter normal sleep architecture and fragment sleep later in the night. Caffeine close to bedtime and irregular schedules can also interfere with restorative sleep.
Persistent snoring, gasping, witnessed breathing pauses, severe daytime sleepiness or difficulty functioning deserves clinical assessment. Overnight polysomnography uses brain-wave, eye-movement, muscle, breathing and oxygen measurements to characterize sleep and diagnose disorders when appropriate. People should not change prescribed medicines or take supplements solely to manipulate tracker-reported sleep stages without discussing the potential benefits and risks with a qualified clinician.
