Have plasmalogen supplements improved memory in human trials?
A 2017 EBioMedicine trial enrolled 328 people with mild Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment. Participants received scallop-derived plasmalogens or placebo for 24 weeks; 276 completed treatment. In the overall analysis, the groups did not differ significantly on the primary cognitive outcome or the secondary outcomes. An overall result that misses statistical significance does not prove that every formulation is ineffective, but it cannot establish a dependable benefit either. Should people take plasmalogens to slow brain aging?
Several questions separate an intriguing laboratory result from a useful treatment: which preparation reaches relevant tissues, what dose is appropriate, who might benefit, and whether any improvement persists. A trial in people with existing cognitive impairment also cannot establish prevention benefits for healthy adults. Future research needs clearly defined patient groups, standardized products, prespecified outcomes, and follow-up long enough to assess meaningful benefit and harm. These are requirements for testing the hypothesis, rather than evidence that the hypothesis is already correct.
