Researchers at the Mark and Mary Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute at the Keck School of Medicine of USC examined how two major brain-tissue systems relate to cognitive aging. As reported by Medical Xpress, the evidence indicates that gray and white matter should be assessed together when researchers investigate changes in memory, attention and other cognitive abilities.
This integrated view matters because brain aging is not a single biological process. Some adults experience substantial structural changes while maintaining useful cognitive function, whereas others develop impairment. The reported findings support a more network-based model, but observational neuroimaging associations cannot by themselves establish that a particular tissue change caused an individual's cognitive decline.
How Do Gray and White Matter Support Thinking?
Gray matter contains large concentrations of neuronal cell bodies, synapses and supporting cells involved in processing information. White matter consists largely of axons insulated by myelin, allowing signals to travel efficiently between brain regions. Memory and reasoning therefore depend both on local processing and on communication across distributed networks.
Aging can affect cortical thickness, regional brain volume, myelin integrity and the organization of white-matter pathways. Considering these features together may explain cognitive differences that would be missed by focusing on one measurement. However, normal age-related changes overlap considerably with findings associated with vascular disease and neurodegenerative disorders, so an MRI image cannot be interpreted reliably without clinical context.
Can People Protect Gray and White Matter as They Age?
The National Institute on Aging advises people to manage blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol; remain physically active; avoid smoking; sleep adequately; and address hearing or vision problems. These measures support cardiovascular and neurological health, although none guarantees that dementia will be prevented.
Persistent memory loss, confusion, difficulty managing familiar tasks or changes that disrupt daily life warrant medical assessment. Clinicians can review medicines, mood, sleep, hearing, metabolic conditions and neurological symptoms because several treatable problems can resemble cognitive decline. The new imaging evidence is most relevant to research today and should not prompt people without symptoms to seek brain scans.
