Frequently asked questions

What does MELD ≥15 mean?

Generally accepted threshold for liver transplant evaluation referral. Below 15, transplant survival benefit is uncertain; above 15, transplant typically improves outcomes.

Is MELD-Na different?

Yes. MELD-Na adds serum sodium to the calculation, giving better mortality prediction in hyponatremic patients. Many transplant centers now use MELD-Na or MELD 3.0.

How accurate is MELD for non-transplant decisions?

MELD was validated for transplant prioritization. It's also used for prognosis in cirrhosis, TIPS evaluation, and pre-operative assessment in liver disease, though performance varies by context.
